What’s a firefighting water tank?
At GRAF we provide a comprehensive selection of firefighting water tanks that are available in range of sizes to suit almost any home. They are a great investment that increase protection of your property all year round. But if you are not sure what a firefighting tank is and how it can help you, read on to find out more.
What is a firefighting water tank?
A firefighting water tank is a large emergency tank that is accessed in the event of a fire by firefighting crews as a backup resource if their trucks run out of water. For example, London Fire Brigade fire engines can hold 1,365 litres and have a maximum pumping capacity of 3,910 litres per min, if required. A firefighting tank should able to hold at least 10,000 litres of water and in some cases can hold as much as 100,000 litres.
How do you install a firefighting tank?
A firefighting tank is stored underground which requires a trench to be excavated in the garden to match the specifications of the system. It can be attached to the mains or set up to harvest rainwater for storage, with tanks usually allowed to rest in a certain level of ground water, although there are individual guidelines for each product. As is the case with water harvesting and stormwater tanks, installing a firefighting tank is a straightforward process that can be completed in a relatively short space of time.
How much water do I need to store?
The amount of water that needs to be stored will depend greatly on where you are located. Homes that may be exposed to nearby wildfires could be at more risk and the Met Office supply daily updates about local threats in your area on their website. Temperatures and wind speed play a big part in the creation and spread of these types of fires and homes located in non-urban areas are more likely to be exposed to these types of dangers. Each year there are also around 20,000 electrical fires in UK homes.
The amount of water you need to store will depend on the size of the tank, which can only be determined by the amount of garden space you have available. If there is a history of wildfires in your area, investing in a firefighting tank is a good investment and will offer additional protection for your home.
